Find out what publishers are looking for and how the commissioning process works, from the Deputy Managing Director of Hachette Children’s Books, Clare Somerville.

Clare Somerville has had a career in the publishing industry spanning over 30 years, much of it in the realm of children’s and educational publishing, but also encompassing illustrated non-fiction and adult fiction.

After graduating from the University of Bristol and pursuing post-graduate studies in business and languages at London City University, Clare entered publishing as a copywriter for Penguin Books. Since then she has worked in a variety of senior international sales, marketing and commercial roles for most of the major publishing houses, such as, Transworld, Reed Elsevier, Egmont, and Harlequin, where she set up and ran their South Asian operation. She is currently deputy Managing Director of the Hachette Children’s Group with a particular remit for sales, foreign rights and marketing. Clare is an external examiner, industry advisor and lecturer on the Kingston University MA Publishing and Journalism course and the University College London MA Publishing course. She also sits on a number of industry committees including a major literacy NGO, The Reading Agency and she has been runner-up in the Women in Publishing Innovation Award.
