In celebration of the 400-year anniversary of the discovery of Epsom Salts, the theme of the 2018 arts festival will be ‘Discovery.’
Epsom Salts (magnesium sulphate or MgSO4) were originally derived from the mineral water that sprang up in a local field in 1618. The discovery led to the Epsom becoming England’s first spa town, known for its artists and entrepreneurs.
Celebrities of the day stayed for the whole summer season in Epsom, to drink and bathe in the famous mineral water. The streets were filled with musicians and there was said to be dancing every night. Visitors included King Charles II and his mistress, the actress Nell Gwynne, diarist Samuel Pepys and England’s first novelist Daniel Defoe (author of Robinson Crusoe).
MGSO4 Festival will be commissioning new work on the theme Discovery – the criteria of which will be announced soon.
If you’d like to meet the festival team, find out about volunteering opportunities, or share any ideas you’d like to propose, please come along to our 2018 festival social upstairs at Caballo Lounge, High Street, Epsom on 1st November from 8pm. Everyone welcome.
MGSO4 Epsom & Ewell Arts Festival will be held 2nd-8th July 2018.
