Journey of Discovery: MGSO4 Contemporary Art Exhibition.

MGSO4 presents an exhibition of work from emerging and mid-career artists, responding to the theme of discovery.
Artists were selected from an open call for submission, interpreting the theme in any way they see fit. The eclectic exhibition includes 3D work, textile and digital mediums as well as well as contemporary fine art. Artworks will be for sale during this exhibition.

Ellie Contreras's work 'Fool's Gold' is long-listed for this exciting exhibition.

"Fool's Gold combines traditional figurative style with a kind of surreal distopian atmosphere with symbolism to reflect my observations about the human condition and my recovery from addiction. It is about living with an insatiable longing for something that in reality is worthless but it becomes an obsession. The magpie with the key represents the a way out if you look for it, and the flower growing in the rocks symbolises growth and beauty even when it seems hopeless.

“I paint in oil in a bold expressive style with a combination of brush and palette knife, sometimes incorporating gold or silver leaf. I avoid too much blending as I like to maintain the integrity of the colours and brush/knife strokes which gives the painting energy and movement. I am very influenced by the British countryside and the wildlife I see on my daily walks in the nature reserve where I live. I also really enjoy painting people and try to represent all the emotions and feelings and the rich palette of colours that makes up human skin. I am becoming increasingly interested in using symbolism to convey ideas."

From 15th May to 1st July, the public will be able to vote online for their favourite artist in the People's Choice Award. The submitted work for each artist is displayed on this website.
